A Visit To Hop Louie in Chinatown April 20, 2008

Filed under: Digital Photography, FOOD, Los Angeles, PHOTOGRAPHY, restaurant — tomatofizz @ 3:00 am

I went to a restaurant called Hop Louie in Chinatown. We ordered the lunch special for three at $5.95 each. the lunch special comes with egg soup, chowmein, sweet and sour pork, chowfaun, and kungpow chicken!! This restaurant I think has a very old fashioned American-Chinese style dishes that are very reasonable and tasty. (I’m not trying to be proud or anything but….) If you visited there before don’t tell me that place sucked because I know what real Chinese food is… I came from Japan where Shanghai was close and my mom and my grandma both cook Chinese food that aren’t things you see at Panda Express and such daily. In my opinion the chef cooks chowfuan better than Empress Pavilion (what???) LOL its true! . Here are some of the food pics I took from the restaurant !!

I finally went to Pink Berry in Little Tokyo and tried two of their famous frozen yogurt.
They have many toppings and sizes to choose from and the price is very reasonable.
I tried the small orgional frozen yogurt with strawberry toppingand another medium frozen yogurt with green tea flavor with no topping. I like the original with the strawberry. It’s very similar to ice cream but it’s more refreshing and sickly sweet.

Daikokuya Restaurant in Little Tokyo. It’s usually crowded like this in the afternoon so you’ll probably have to wait about fifteen minuets or so.

Helpful suggestions:
1. Come early so that you dont have to wait.
 2. If it’s your first time visiting , you have to go inside and sign your name and party number on the sign in sheet. *they will call you.
3. Be prepared to wait.
4. Order the Daikokuya Origional Ramen and the combo if you are a first timer.
5. When you order ask for the ko’teri – katamen *KO’TERI= Thicker soup than usual *KATAMEN = Aldente * soft=hard noodles* it makes the ramen taste much better!!!
6. Order beer with it!

daikoku

This is Daikokuya Restaurant in Little Tokyo, located in the historic buildings where Chop Suey restaurant is located in. They have many dishes to choose from, but I recomend you to try their origional Daikokuya Ramen & combos. The price is very reasonable and the atmosphere is retro japan, with 40’s/50’s vintage tin posters and tiny Godzilla and Kewpie dolls decorated. This place is very popular so if you go there, there might be three to five people waiting ahead of you *especially at lunch time*….but it’s worth the wait!!!

*This place serves alcohol beverages also, & good for families*

I orderd the shredded pork donburi (bowl) combo with the Daikokuya Ramen.

This set $10.50! but excludes kirin beer*

If your gonna add the tekkadon  (maguro *tuna* bowl), then it’s $12.50 !

My Favorite Tofu Dish August 2, 2007

Filed under: FOOD — tomatofizz @ 12:02 am

This is a Tofu recipe that my mom taught me how to make. It’s very simple to make and it’s soo delicious. It’s also Japanese

tofu grattan

This is what you need to make this dish:
1. A pack of tofu *choose slightly firm (serves 3ppl)

2. Mayonnaise (as mush as you want)

3. Soy sauce (1tbsp)

4. Miso paste (1-2tbsp)

5. Sugar (a pinch)

6. Green Onions or Chive

Drain the tofu completely first !!***To make sure put in microwave oven for 30 secs**

Step #1 Cut the tofu in flat squares like the one above and slice the green onion/chives as much as you want.

Step #2 Get a small oven safe dish like the one above and put 1tbs of of soy sauce ans swirl it around until it spreads in the dish. Then put the tofu *about four cut pieces* in the dish. Make them flat like the pic on top.

Step #3 Get a small cup and mix in 1tbsp of water, a pinch of sugar, & 2 tbsp of miso paste and mix. **This will be the sauce**

Step #4 Spread the miso sauce on the tofu evenly on each tofu with a spoon.

Step #5 Squeeze the mayo on top in a form of a zigzag *Note: If you don’t have a squeezable mayonaise, with a spoon, scoop 1-2 table spoons of mayo on the middle of a plastic wrap and tie the top up == this forms a little bag… then, poke a small hole in the little bag with a tooth pick and squeeze the mayo out on top of the tofu.* or if you dont like mayo dont put it at all, but I suggest…the mayo will bake and becomes crispy-ish!!

Last, sprinkle the green onion/chive on top of the tofu and bake until the top is golden brown. Note* Do not bake too much! tofu will become dry!!

ENJOY!
